Do you believe in the exceptional potential of every child? Volunteer to help children in Hackney aged 9-13 years who are falling behind at school
Jump on board and take part in unlocking a child’s potential through the power of positivity and fun. Right now, Literacy Pirates need volunteers to support young people aged 9 to 13 in Hackney and Haringey whose teachers think they would benefit from extra help and who have fewer opportunities.
Young Pirates join after-school sessions in fantastical spaces in Hackney, Haringey and digitally online. Volunteers support local children as they become published authors, content creators, and film stars. Developing confidence along with a love for the written word.
A recent IOE study, examining the effect of reading for pleasure on cognitive development over time, found that children who read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling between the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read. Reading for pleasure was found to be one of the single most important factors for children’s cognitive development between the ages of 10 and 16.
By committing just a couple of sessions per month, you could change the course of a child’s life at a crucial time in their education.
Volunteering for the literacy pirates is really flexible and can be done in person or virtually.
