Laura Williams, an East London fitness trainer, shares her top exercise tips to help keep you and the family fit and healthy over the weeks ahead… 

Create some joyful future goals. Mistletoe countdown, getting Twister-ready…Try and plan some exercise goals for a future that, fingers crossed, include being in the same room as loved ones. Envisage that reality: socially-distanced clambering over a sister-in-law across the Twister mat. You need strong quads (front of thighs) for that. So, to be on the safe side, do 2 sets of 20 squats every day from now until the end of December.

Mix up your indoor and outdoor workouts. One day might involve a power walk spotting squirrels; another an online class a friend recommends. Keep your routine balanced: a heavy loading routine (yes, walking habit, we’re looking at you) could do with a flexibility friend!

Take this time to catch up on exercise gaps. Keep meaning to work on your core? Still determined to discover the HIIT hype? While there’s time – a bit less transit, socialising’s slow – spend a few minutes each day discovering the delights of exercise downtime.

Go for good value fitness. We’re eight months in at the time of writing: the cost of living has gone through the roof and Christmas is around the corner. Any class or instructor should consider themselves lucky to have you. Go for added value exercise, like classes that only charge per household (not per individual); see who’s offering giveaways, and make sure you sign up for blocks of classes that have flexible end dates!

Take plenty of rest days. If you’re already in a good exercise groove, congratulations! But make sure you vary the load on your body, and take ample rest. When exercise is the one reason you’re leaving the house, it’s very easy to overdo it. Don’t be surprised if your shins or heel hurts after a two-hour walk with a friend. Give muscles a good stretch, even if you’ve just had a stroll and don’t hesitate to put your feet up.
