Did you know the tradition of a knees up goes back to Victorian times in East London?
The term is from a bawdy song full of cheeky innuendos called “Knees Up Mother Brown”.
While West London was all well to do, prim and proper and the Queen’s English, Cockneys had a whale of a time hiking up their skirts, kicking their legs in the air and coming up with silly rhymes.
Life in East London in Victorian times was hard but the Cockney Spirit was one of pluck and courage and plenty of good humour. East Londoners have always known how to laugh in the face of adversity.
So put on your “ones and twos” and head to Big Penny Social for a good old “ding dong”. Sure to be a brilliant day out whether you were born yesterday or you’re soon to get a birthday letter from the “Bean.”
