East End Kids Roast Dinner Review

There’s nothing quite like an East London Sunday roast in the autumn, a leisurely walk and a blissful snooze in front of the telly. Invited to review Duvale’s Riverside East in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for our EEK members offers, we were eager to investigate. Jaimie Duvale has worked with Claude Bosi, Anton Edelmann. His new residency partners his passion for top quality, British ingredients with Riverside East’s focus on sustainability.

We had a feeling that our Sunday lunch would be out of the ordinary and we were not disappointed.
Chef Jamie Duvale knows his way around a traditional British roast. His focus on simple, well-executed dishes puts heart and soul into this classic family meal, often butchered by restaurants and pubs who trade volume for quality. From perfectly tender roasted meats to golden crisp baked cauliflower cheese that could convert even the most hardened cheese sauce sceptic (like my husband!), every plate feels thoughtfully prepared. Jamie’s passion for honest, comfort food shines through in every bite, making you feel like you’re getting a bit of home-cooked love from a chef who cares about his craft.

The Yorkshire puddings are the perfect example of Duvale’s generosity. It’s Yorkshires for everybody at Riverside East, regardless of your choice of meat. Yes, that’s right – even with chicken! I have a deep distrust for places that ration these golden delights as if they are any less divine with a gravy that isn’t bovine. But it’s not just 1, we are talking endless gigantic Yorkshires! Our waitress encouraged us to try to beat the previous week’s most greedy customer who had eaten 5! But it’s not just quantity, Duvale’s got some kind of secret magic going on that makes them so much tastier than anywhere else!

The roast potatoes were fluffy inside, crisp outside, and clearly freshly cooked – none of that hard, stale nonsense from spuds sitting around for hours. There was also plenty of gravy, not the miserly drizzle you get at some pubs, so every bite was perfectly moist.

But let’s talk staff – really lovely, the kind of people who genuinely want you to enjoy yourself. They were also super friendly and welcoming to our dog bringing him fresh water upon arrival.

How Kid Friendly is the Food?

My 9 year old, although initially a little overwhelmed by the huge portions, really enjoyed the roast chicken, parsnip, carrots and Yorkshire pudding. He especially loved choosing his favourite ice cream treat from a selection of Little Judes, Hackney Gelato and Happy Endings. The huge helpings also meant that his dinner that evening, just a couple of hours later, was his left-over chicken and a few cherry tomatoes. Cooking was out of the question as I still felt completely full!

It’s not often you find a place where both adults and kids leave completely satisfied, but Riverside East really nails it. A breath of fresh air after too many Sunday lunches dealing with overwhelmed servers and underwhelming food at overcrowded pubs.

Absolutely stuffed, we waddled out for a long walk through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and then Vicky Park, treated to nature’s display of the warm bright hues of autumn in full swing. Everything lit golden by a low setting sun, it was the perfect end to a delicious meal and a reminder of why a Sunday roast and a stroll in autumn are simply unbeatable.

There’s more to enjoy at Riverside East

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or just getting together with friends, you can add bottomless fizz at just £20 per head! There’s also an extensive list of cocktails- we highly recommend the Espresso Martini and the Chocolate Old Fashioned.

Riverside East has also launched a brilliant brunch on Sundays too. Tuck into classic dishes like Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine plus Not Avo on Toast (two poached St Ewe eggs, crushed minted peas, feta, and pickled chilli on sourdough toast) or, if you’re over breakfast, you can tuck into a delicious Chicken Caesar Salad, The Mighty Cheese or The Conqueror burgers, or pizza.

£25 per person includes a welcome drink such as a brunch cocktail, Bloody Mary, Mimosa or Bellini, a main dish and bottomless filter coffee. Bottomless brunch runs every Saturday (9am-4pm) and Sunday roast runs every Sunday (12pm-4pm),
