My 8-year-old and I had an absolute blast putting together this eco-friendly replica of the Wallace and Gromit rocket from ‘A Grand Day Out’ by Build Your Own Kits.
Let’s face it, into every British Summer a little rain must fall and while there’s no such thing as bad weather, staying indoors can be fun too especially with the right family project. Putting together The Wallace and Gromit rocket from Build Your Own Kits is the perfect way to while away an afternoon or two. Made entirely of sustainable cardboard, it makes a great gift for “children” aged 10 – 100, perfect for some intergenerational bonding and brilliantly compact for family visits this Summer.
We enjoyed playing with the parts while assembling it, you can check out our reel to see how much fun we had. You don’t need anything, apart from maybe some Wensleydale and cups of tea to fuel the build, as it all comes included in the kit. Craftphobes will rejoice in the absence of glue, mess and fuss. Finding the pieces is a little like finding puzzle pieces as you discover fun intricate details that bring the magic of the much loved Aardman Animations films to life in your own home.

Children will surely enjoy most of the build but because the instructions are a little complex at times we recommend adult supervision. You may need to bend the more sturdy tabs to secure the tight fit of the upper panels as you go around. All of this means you get to enjoy it too. I think I might have gotten even more into it than my son – those quirky details stole my heart! But despite being younger than 10, he got stuck right in and was able to get involved with 90% of the build with enthusiasm and growing confidence as it all came together.

You’ll be amazed by what the clever people at Build Your Own kits have designed. The best way to describe it is kind of like a pop up 3D puzzle with parts that move. The whole thing opens up with a genius pulling tab and the rocket flames retract at the same time. The characters are sturdy enough to play with although, Gromit’s ears needed a little sticky tape as they fell off a couple of times.
At just £29.99, the price packs incredible value for something to keep them occupied, provide STEM learning and in the end, makes a fantastic toy.

Along with this incredible Wallace and Gromit Rocket, Build Your Own makes loads of brilliant kits, including some that are lower cost for classmates’ birthdays.
